But after reading the (excellent) interview, I have to say I'm quite surprised at how Chester was treated by the guys through the years. Again, as humans, we adapt. It was the biggest adjustment Ive ever had to make, musically and culturally. Had they brought me, they would have had to pay another musician just to sit there. This was so clear that inSeconfsOutduring the mixture they recorded guitar parts withan incredibly low volume. Weve been healthy, fortunately. But Im over it now. The very first tour was a tour of England. The amount of music he made in that time is just remarkable. First, a great interview. He said they were going to be doing something totally different and they werent interested. When we got to rehearsal, I didnt know about the stuff that was going on in Phils life. Did you take a crash course in Genesis before you went in? It was about to move to Chicago and I was kind of wondering, Why havent I got my contract yet?. Man, it was wonderful. I cant do that.. In my opinion, everyone has to sell out a little bit to survive. I was there just a week and I actually ran across them in Sydney. Thats what they did when they left their gigs with Miles [Davis] and Cannonball [Adderley] to start Weather Report. I probably heard more Elvis than anything in the Fifties. He would have subdivisions within a bar. That was just rhythm section, [keyboardist] George Duke, [bassist] Tom Fowler. In the meantime, they had brought in [drummer] Narada Michael Walden. It was great. So they took some time off. But on that first tour, Id be like, Come on, man. The Australia leg got added later and they wound up doing a film of the tour. They had promised him membership in the band. We were playing London near the end and the guys all came down. Yeah. Do you think if Genesis come to America, youd want to go see the show? Part of me is not disappointed that Im not playing those same tunes again after 30 years. I dont know how to describe it, but it was based on holograph technology. But on that first tour Id be like, Come on, man. The studio had tanks in the studio since they dealt with it all the time. It was another situation of me not getting any sleep since I was up all night writing charts.
